Description

Hughes 38 — 38' Bluewater Sailboat | 100% Electric | Ready for Adventure

Located in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico — currently on the hard. Closest Airport: Phoenix - Arizona

We are offering our 38-foot Hughes 38, a proven bluewater cruising sailboat designed for serious offshore sailing and built by Sparkman & Stephens. The hull was designed by Howard Hughes, and the Hughes 38 has a strong reputation as a capable, seaworthy ocean-going boat.

This is a strong, lightweight and highly capable bluewater boat, designed to take you offshore and potentially around the world. She is also equipped with a 100% electric propulsion system, powered by solar energy.

We have made the difficult decision to sell because our family circumstances are changing and we are no longer able to continue our life at sea as planned.

⚡ Electric & Solar Propulsion
  • 100% electric propulsion
  • 2 electric motors:
    • 1 propulsion motor for the sailboat
    • 1 motor for the dinghy
  • 8 lead-acid batteries, all tested and in excellent condition
  • 6 × 100W solar panels
  • Solar charge controller + spare controllers
  • 12V to 110V power outlets × 3
  • Starlink-ready internet setup

The combination of a lightweight hull, efficient electric propulsion and solar power makes this an especially interesting setup for someone looking for a quieter and more sustainable cruising boat.

The boat comes with a large amount of equipment and cruising gear, so you can start preparing for your next adventure without having to build your inventory from scratch.

🔧 Work to Consider

The boat is ready for continued preparation and cruising, but there are a couple of items we would recommend addressing before an ocean crossing:

  • Genoa: the sail should be repaired and reinforced if you plan to undertake an ocean crossing.
  • Anchor chain: some sections show rust. For maximum safety offshore, we recommend replacing it or having it professionally re-galvanized.
  • If you don't like electric propulsion a brand new shaft and foldable propeller are in place ready to welcome your desired motor.

We prefer to be completely transparent about these items so the next owner knows exactly what they are getting.

📍 Location & Access

The boat is currently on the hard in Puerto Peñasco,  Mexico.

The nearest major international airport is Phoenix, Arizona, from where Puerto Peñasco can be reached by car or bus.

Puerto Peñasco is a well-known destination for sailors and is an accessible starting point for someone looking to take ownership of a boat already located in Mexico.

🌊 A Boat for Someone Who Wants to Go Cruising

This isn't simply a weekend sailboat. The Hughes 38 was designed with serious offshore cruising in mind.

She offers a great foundation for someone who wants to finish the remaining preparation, launch her, and begin their own adventure — whether that's coastal cruising, extended passages, or eventually sailing around the world.
